George Floyd protests across America

Laura King, daughter of Rodney King, whose brutal beating by white police sparked riots in Los Angeles 20 years ago, spoke on Wednesday of her father’s case and the death of George Floyd.

When asked if she feels we will see justice for Floyd’s death, she said, “I don’t want to be passive, but no.”

“I still don’t feel that the officers who were involved in beating my father – I don’t think we got justice for them,” she said. “None of them got long-term judgments … I think one of them works by the Santa Monica department or the Culver City division. This is very frustrating to me. Because this means that he has regained his job, which means that someone else is suffering now because I’m sure He did not learn because I am sure he did not receive a long-term punishment. “

Some context: In 1991, Rodney King was severely beaten by LAPD officers after a high-speed hunt across Los Angeles County.

A video clip of a beat, taken by a witness, shows that the king beat him with police batons more than 50 times. More than 20 officers were present at the scene, most of whom were LAPD. King suffered 11 fractures and other injuries as a result of the beating.

Four police officers were charged, but acquitted – and black Los Angeles erupted in anger. The ensuing riots led to Over 50 deaths and $ 1 billion in property losses.

Laura on the death of George Floyd: Laura King was approaching the age of George Floyd’s daughter during the beating and riots.

What happened to her father, King said, “is something I live with every day. This is something (George Floyd’s daughter) will, unfortunately, live with every day. I don’t wish it to anyone.”

“You know, that night my father was beaten. I lost part of it, but fortunately I did not lose it, by the grace of God … Regarding that night, my dad embraced it even though it was not the same as before. She said that she You will never have this opportunity. And to me, this – this is sick. “
